In this artwork I paint a tribute to Stevie Wonder, an artist who does not see music but feels it deep within. I have depicted him at the moment when everything comes together: voice, rhythm and emotion. The headphones and microphone stand for his direct connection with music, while the butterflies around him symbolise freedom, hope and the joy his songs spread across the world. Stevie Wonder was born in 1950 and lost his sight shortly after birth. Yet he developed an exceptional musical talent and grew into a world star at Motown while still very young.
With iconic songs such as Superstition, Isn't She Lovely and Higher Ground he showed that music can be powerful both personally and socially. That social engagement is something I wanted to make clearly audible in this work. In 1985 Stevie Wonder played an important part in the legendary recording of We Are the World at A&M Studios in Los Angeles. Together with many other superstars he lent himself to USA for Africa, raising money for relief in Ethiopia. His contribution was not only vocal: among other things he helped Bob Dylan find his own vocal part, a moment that sums up his musicality and his humanity perfectly. With this painting I wanted to show that Stevie Wonder is more than a great musician. He is a connector, an inspiration and a voice for human compassion. The colours, movement and light in this work are my translation of his life energy: music as a universal language that brings people together.

The artwork is printed on high-grade Fuji Crystal DP II Ultra HD photographic paper, permanently bonded to a 4 mm thick Alu-dibond support and protected with a 3 mm layer of high-quality Liquid Gloss® epoxy resin. This finish gives the artwork not only an intense colour and three-dimensional presence but also a refined, luxurious appearance. It also guarantees many years of durability and resistance to ultraviolet light. Where a frame or border has been applied to the work, it is integrated within the artwork itself. The gold frame or border is integrated within the artwork and is therefore not present as a physical frame.
