Circular Continuum

About this work

Circular Continuum presents a fascinating play of repetition, depth and illusion. Across the whole surface a crisp grid of small, colourful circles is visible, each built up from a core of dark dots that look like flower patterns. The colours range from strong blue, purple, yellow, green and red to white, creating a rhythmic and almost hypnotic effect.

At the centre floats a large sphere, built up from the same pattern of dots and colours as the background. Through subtle shadows and gradations of light this sphere seems to detach itself from the plane and to be genuinely three-dimensional. The background remains flat and repetitive, while the central sphere suggests depth, producing a strong visual contrast.

The work plays with perception: what at first seems a decorative pattern turns, on longer looking, into a spatial illusion in which inside and outside, foreground and background run into one another. The whole evokes associations with optical art (op art) and digital aesthetics, and invites the viewer to keep searching for structure, order and meaning within the colourful abundance.
