About this work

Monochrome Star presents a powerful black-and-white radial composition recalling a stylised starfish or flower. From a bright midpoint countless repeating forms fan outwards, like overlapping petals or feathers. The alternation of deep black and soft white creates a strong optical effect: the image seems to pulse, to turn and even to breathe.

The forms are crisply and symmetrically constructed, but through the fine gradations and the undulating contours a sense of movement and depth nonetheless arises. Towards the edges the lines extend into sharp rays, so that the centre is emphasised even more strongly. The whole balances between order and illusion, between calming symmetry and hypnotic dynamism. The painting evokes associations with optical art (op art) and mandalas: it invites prolonged looking and works almost meditatively, while at the same time radiating tension and energy.
