Monochrome Rotation presents a powerful example of graphic abstraction in black and white, in which movement and symmetry take centre stage. From the centre a rotating structure unfolds, like the sails of a windmill or a mechanical eye turning slowly. The white lines cut sharply through the deep black background and form repetitive, diamond-shaped and leaf-like figures. These patterns seem to multiply as they fan outwards, creating a hypnotic sense of rotation.
The lines vary subtly in thickness and direction, creating an illusion of depth and flow. Some forms seem to emerge, while others disappear into the black, as though the image were breathing and pulsing at the same time. The fine, short lines between the larger forms reinforce this effect and give the whole an almost living energy. The absence of colour places the emphasis entirely on contrast, rhythm and structure. The painting balances between order and movement: strictly geometric in conception, but organic in experience. It evokes associations with optical art (op art), but also with natural phenomena such as wind, feathers or eddies.
The work invites the viewer to let their gaze turn around the centre, demonstrating how simplicity in colour can lead to maximum intensity in form and experience.
