Chequered Tension presents a crisp, graphic interplay between order and tension. In the background lies a black-and-white chequerboard pattern that suggests depth and perspective, as though the surface were lightly curved. At the centre floats a gleaming, gold-coloured form resembling a stretched star or an elastic membrane, drawn taut by four thin, blue-grey lines pointing towards the corners of the image.
Around this midpoint, sharp, dark forms cut through the image, as though the chequerboard were being torn open or enclosed. These contrasting elements reinforce the sense of force, stretch and tension. The whole balances between abstract geometry and an almost futuristic, three-dimensional illusion, in which stability and deformation are continually in dialogue with one another.
